Does Vocational Education Matter in Rural China? A Comparison of the Effects of Upper-Secondary Vocational and Academic Education: Evidence from CLDS Survey

The Chinese government has emphasised the role of vocational education and training (VET) in promoting rural economy. Since 2018, invested heavily setting up secondary schools, centres, specialised programmes, courses areas. This paper aimed to explore whether VET at upper-secondary level leads better labour market outcomes than academic We also quantitively investigate social prestige among residents by comparing subjective status those who graduated from schools general schools. drew data China Labour-force Dynamic Survey (CLDS). A binary logit model multinomial were used this research. results showed that graduates had an advantage over terms their income employment stability. However, led lower when compared with education. study demonstrated although areas could potentially benefit financially, cultural change is needed ensure elevation standing promote worthiness, effectiveness, capabilities possess.
